Inspired by local artist Shaun Tan and his book The Lost Thing which deals with “questions of apathy, particularly the suppression of imagination and playful distraction by pragmatism and bureaucracy, conditions that affect both a society and its individuals.”
Shaun Tan has painted miniatures on the surface of bottle tops so you will have to look very closely. The artworks we are exhibiting were part of the process of creating his children’s book ‘The Lost Thing’ in which the main character collects and classifies bottle tops at the beach.
Ruth Parker has collected thousands of rusty bottle tops that have been run over by cars. Ruth weaves the bottle tops together with wire, creating a fabric that takes on a life of its own. The fabric is surprisingly sculptural and can be moulded into many different forms allowing the works to change over the course of the exhibition.
D&K have also been collecting rusty bottle tops around Perth and present them with a satirical approach. They have been investigating as collectors and re-present bottle tops as very important historical artifacts.
The project invited and indeed challenged people to create artworks from the common bottle top, a seemingly mundane and expendable object, and thus include the artists in our musing about curiosity and wonder in our society.
The three artists have captured that sense of wonder of the world, each with their own twist.
